Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 30: Hamlet in Bits, Fanhattan update, Hank Hazard, RoboHero (Appolicious)

Start your week with a dose of Hamlet, thanks to our leading iPhone app, Hamlet in Bits. The app brings you all kinds of information that helps to understand Shakespeare?s play, including audio and animated performances and the text to go with it. We?ve also got a big update to Fanhattan, which can help you find new shows and movies to watch on Netflix, iTunes, Hulu and more. Hank Hazard, a physics-based puzzle game about a daredevil hamster, will keep your thumbs busy this week, as will turn-based strategy title RoboHero.

Got an English exam over Shakespeare?s Hamlet coming up, or just an interest in understanding one of the most studied plays in the English language? You?ll want to check out Hamlet in Bits, an education app that packs of wealth of resources about the play including a complete, unabridged original version that you can read right on your iPhone or iPad.

Hamlet in Bits also includes three hours of professional audio recordings of performances of Hamlet, as well as animations showing the play?s various scenes. You?ll be able to read along with the text as you watch or listen to the dialog being spoken, and Hamlet in Bits also includes character biographies to keep you up to speed with who?s who in Shakespeare?s tale of murderous intrigue. The app even includes a character relationship map, so you?ll never lose track of why characters are important or what?s going on in the twisting narrative.

Entertainment app Fanhattan is a portal for discovering new movies and TV shows across a variety of services including Hulu, Netflix, Lifetime, Crackle, iTunes and PBS. When you fire up the app, you?re greeted with a list of popular new content from the services you use. You can also find more by searching by directors, actors, titles and more; then, Fanhattan provides you other choices you might like based on the things you?re already into.

Fanhattan just got a big update that adds more news services to the app?s content choices. You can see what?s going in the latest entertainment news with the new Fan Feed feature, and from that news you can find new entertainment to enjoy, like TV shows or movies that are garnering a lot of attention (or just got nominated for Oscars). You can also favorite stories, directors, actors, shows and movies to find more content that includes them, making Fan Feed smarter and bringing you even more stuff you?ll enjoy.

Daredevil hamster Hank Hazard needs to show off his stuff, earn points and become the greatest daredevil (hamster) ever. So you?ll need to help him through level after physics-based level, popping bubbles and carefully maneuvering Hank through each puzzle in Hank Hazard, grabbing all stars in each stage before reaching a goal. It?s standard fare for physics-based puzzle titles, but Hank Hazard brings in its own feel and some solid level design to a crowded field.

Each stage in Hank Hazard requires you to meet a special requirement to get a bonus ?nut? that kicks up your score. In some levels, you?ll want to finish as quickly as you can to beat a timer. In others, it?ll be the number of ?moves? (like taps or actions where you manipulate the level) you need to keep to a minimum. This adds a little bit of variety to each of Hank Hazard?s levels, plus something to strive for to help you climb the game?s leaderboards, care of Game Center.

RoboHero (iPhone, iPad) Free (with $1.99 in-app purchase)

Turn-based strategy title RoboHero is all about planning. Each level has you attempting to navigate to reach a goal of some kind, moving your robot around a grid to avoid hazards, blast enemies and get where he?s going as quickly as possible. To move him around in each stage, you?ll tap the grid to give him commands, storing up to 15 in his memory banks at a time. Once you?ve planned out each round?s moves, you?ll hit the play button to put your robot into motion. Strong planning is the key to keeping him from getting turned into scrap.

RoboHero packs 30 levels and three gameplay modes, most of which his free (after the first 10 levels, you?ll need to purchase the full game through an in-app purchase of $1.99). It also includes an arena mode and a multiplayer mode that allows you to take on as many four other players, or six computer-controlled opponents.

Qaeda militants killed in Yemen air strike: residents (Reuters)

ADEN (Reuters) ? At least 11 al Qaeda militants, including a number of local leaders, were killed in an overnight air strike in southern Yemen, local residents said on Tuesday.

They said an unidentified drone attacked the militants while they were travelling in two vehicles east of the city of Lawdar in Abyan province in southern Yemen.

A tribal leader said at least four of those killed were local al Qaeda leaders. Residents said no civilians were hurt in the air strike.

The United States has used drones repeatedly to attack al Qaeda militants in Yemen. Last September, a U.S. drone killed U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, described by U.S. officials as “chief of external operations” for al Qaeda in Yemen.

The latest attack could deal a blow to al Qaeda which has exploited unrest and protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh to strengthen its hold on remote areas in southern Yemen in recent months.

An opposition-led government has been set up in Yemen after Saleh agreed in November to transfer authority to his deputy ahead of presidential elections in February.

But protests have continued and activists are pressing on with demands that Saleh be tried for alleged killings of demonstrators and that the government is purged of members of his family.

Prostate Cancer Target Analyzed | January 30, 2012 Issue – Vol. 90 …

To understand better how two new anticancer agents work, researchers have obtained the first X-ray structures of a key cytochrome P450 enzyme to which they bind. Understanding how the drugs inhibit the enzyme could aid the design of more effective medications for prostate and breast cancer with fewer side effects.

Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) is found in cell membranes in the human reproductive tract and adrenal gland, where it catalyzes sequential hydroxylase and lyase reactions in the biosynthesis of testosterone and other sex hormones. The approved Janssen Biotech drug abiraterone (Zytiga) and the Tokai Pharmaceuticals agent TOK-001 (Galeterone), which is in clinical trials, are prostate cancer treatments that work by inhibiting both the enzyme?s lyase activity, accounting for most of their efficacy, and its hydroxylase activity, which causes side effects.

Emily E. Scott, an associate professor of medicinal chemistry, and Natasha M. DeVore at the University of Kansas have obtained X-ray structures by getting CYP17A1 to crystallize with each of these drugs bound (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature10743).

The structures reveal that the drugs bind to the enzyme in a manner far different from what scientists expected. Modeling studies had suggested the drugs would orient parallel to the plane of the enzyme?s active-site heme group; instead, the drugs are nearly perpendicular to it.

Other P450 enzymes have been analyzed structurally, says cytochrome P450 specialist Paul Ortiz de Montellano of the University of California, San Francisco. But the new structures are ?particularly important? in the search for prostate and breast cancer drugs with fewer side effects. For instance, they could lead to medications highly selective for CYP17A1, one of 57 similar P450 enzymes found in humans.

Scott says her group is collaborating with that of University of Kansas synthetic chemist Jeffrey Aub? ?to design new compounds we hope will be more-selective drugs??by inhibiting the enzyme?s lyase but not its hydroxylase activity, for example.

Mitt Romney Florida Supporters Feel The Momentum

‘I just really want to see some hope restored in America,’ one voter tells MTV News a day before Florida primary.

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — One skipped school to be there, another took time out from her college courses and working at her two jobs to drop in, and both liked what they heard from Mitt Romney on Monday (January 30).

One day before the primary in the pivotal swing state of Florida, which could finally cement his status as the leader of the pack in the Republican presidential nominating contest, a pumped-up Romney took the stage at a Caterpillar equipment dealership to speak to an enthusiastic crowd.

His message of “real hope and change” resonated with Amy Gallogly, 23, a community college student who works at a tax service and an alarm company in the area. “I just really want to see some hope restored in American,” she said after the event wrapped as Romney shook hands and signed autographs while Kid Rock’s “Born Free” blasted from the speakers. “I’m just really pushing for any Republican candidate. … The one reason I really am pushing for Mitt Romney [though] is because I think he’s the one candidate who can beat Obama.”

High school senior Tori Reiman, 18, came with her mom, who works in the real-estate business in the state with the nation’s highest foreclosure rate. “I’m kind of over Obama,” she said. “He’s not doing his job. He’s raising the taxes on the richer side of American, which I don’t believe is fair.” Asked why she came out to the event, Reiman said, “I believe in Mitt Romney and I believe in America.”

Law student Eric Bast, 24, definitely picked up on Romney’s message of change, saying that he’s energized to participate in his first election. “I want to change it back,” said Bast, who recently registered to vote.

Japan’s Population Decline: Estimate Shows One-Third Shrink By 2060

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan’s rapid aging means the national population of 128 million will shrink by one-third by 2060 and seniors will account for 40 percent of people, placing a greater burden on the shrinking work force population to support the social security and tax systems.

The population estimate released Monday by the Health and Welfare Ministry paints a grim future.

In year 2060, Japan will have 87 million people. The number of people 65 or older will nearly double to 40 percent, while the national work force of people between ages 15 and 65 will shrink to about half of the total population, according to the estimate, made by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.

The total fertility rate, or the expected number of children born per woman during lifetime, in 2060 is estimated at 1.35, down from 1.39 in 2010 ? well below more than 2 needed to keep the country’s population from declining. But the average Japanese will continue to live longer. The average life expectancy for 2060 is projected at 90.93 for women, up from 86.39 in 2010, and 84.19 years for men, up from 79.64 years.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has pledged to push for social security and tax reforms this year. A bill he promised to submit by the end of March would raise the 5 percent sales tax in two stages to 8 percent in 2014 and 10 percent by 2015, although opposition lawmakers and the public pose challenges to its approval.

Experts say that Japan’s population will keep losing 1 million every year in coming decades and the country urgently needs to overhaul its social security and tax system to reflect the demographic shift.

“Pension programs, employment and labor policy and social security system in this country is not designed to reflect such rapidly progressing population decline or aging,” Noriko Tsuya, a demography expert at Keio University, said on public broadcaster NHK. “The government needs to urgently revise the system and implement new measures based on the estimate.”

(AP) ? Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins and Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson threw touchdown passes to lead the North to a 23-13 victory over the South in the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Purdue kicker Carson Wiggs put it away with his third short field goal, a 28-yarder with 4:11 left in the showcase for senior NFL prospects.

Boise State’s Kellen Moore led that clinching 13-play drive that consumed 8:36 with the help of a running clock.

It snuffed out a spark provided by South quarterback Nick Foles of Arizona, who started his career with Cousins at Michigan State.

Foles had gotten the South into the end zone by firing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Arizona teammate Juron Criner with 12:55 left in the game.

It was an up-and-down day for a crew of quarterbacks with sparkling college credentials, with a combined five interceptions.

Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead had a big day for the North. He set a Senior Bowl record in the first half with 98 yards on two late punt returns, and was named the MVP. Pead also rushed for a team-high 31 yards on eight carries.

Cousins completed 5 of 11 passes for 115 yards but threw an interception. Moore, who won an college-record 50 games as a starting quarterback, was 6-of-12 passing for 50 yards, and had a 23-yarder to set up the final field goal that put the North up two scores.

Wilson completed 4 of 7 passes for 45 yards with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones in the second quarter. He also threw an interception.

Arkansas receiver Joe Adams, the South’s Most Outstanding Player, had six catches for 116 yards after losing a fumble on the opening drive. He had a 36-yarder and a 29-yarder in the third quarter.

Criner gained 77 yards on six catches.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner of Utah State had seven tackles and an interception and was the North’s Most Outstanding Player.

Wiggs made kicks of 27, 32 and 28 yards while missing a 37-yarder in the final minutes.

Foles almost got the South back in it earlier, but his fourth-down pass from the 13 was incomplete with 3:59 left in the third quarter.

He had the best stat line of the six quarterbacks. Foles was 11-of-15 passing for 136 yards and the TD, and was the only South quarterback who wasn’t picked off.

San Diego State’s Ryan Lindley was 10 of 21 for 103 yards and also was intercepted once. Oklahoma State’s 28-year-old Brandon Weeden started for the South but was picked off twice on nine attempts, completing five passes for 56 yards.

Cousins put the North ahead 20-6 early in the second half with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Arizona State’s Gerell Robinson. The 6-foot-3, 223-pound Robinson caught it coming across the middle and raced down the right sideline.

It was the second time on the drive Cousins had thrown for a nice gain on third down, hitting T.J. Graham (North Carolina State) for 22 yards earlier.

The North’s Kendall Reyes of Connecticut had two sacks.
